For two years this was simply what "running Stable Diffusion" meant. Nearly every guide, extension and YouTube tutorial from that period assumes it, and the sheer weight of that ecosystem is still the best reason to pick it.

Development has slowed considerably, and the projects that forked it — Forge in particular — now move faster and handle newer models better. It remains an excellent place to start, because everything written about it still applies.
